Oil changes are an essential part of car maintenance, but how often should you get them? There isn't a set number of miles or months that apply to all, so it's best to look out for certain signs.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Although many people still believe oil changes should be performed every 3 months or 3,000 miles, this doesn't hold true for everyone. Many conditions, including how often you use your car, the conditions you drive in, and even the make and model of your vehicle  can all impact on how often you will need an oil change. Since there is no set rule, how do you know it's time for an oil change? These tips can help you get to the bottom of it.

Visually Inspect Your Oil

One of the easiest ways to figure out if your oil needs to be changed is by visually inspecting it. If you're not a car enthusiast, you may not feel completely comfortable inspecting your oil at first, but after a few goes you'll feel like an expert. There are a few things you'll need to check for. Before we get into what you need to look out for, you first need to know how to check your oil. To start, open your hood and find the oil dipstick. Pull this out and clean it off with a clean washcloth. Next, put it back in its place and pull it back out. You can look at the oil on the dipstick, or, if necessary, dab a bit of the oil on your fingers to check its consistency. One of the things to inspect is the color of your oil. Although new oil tends to be a honey brown color, don't get scared if your oil is black. Oil will turn black within the first few weeks of use, so this isn't something to worry about. Although you shouldn't worry about black oil, we do mention it because once your oil is old it will not only be a very dark color, it can also present other indicators. Next, check your oil for dirt and other particles that can indicate your oil filter is full. If you can see particles floating around in your oil, this isn't a good sign. This can mean your oil filter is no longer able to filter out contaminants, reducing the effectiveness of your oil and increasing the chances of deposits developing in your engine. Remember to change your oil filter every time you change your oil for the best results. Finally, look at the consistency of your oil. New oil is generally at least a bit translucent. As it circulates through your engine, it can start to become more opaque. When you pull your dipstick out, check to see if you can see the dipstick through the oil. If you can still see it, your oil should be fine. If you can't see the dipstick at all and your oil is looking quite thick, it may be time to change your oil. Listen for Engine Sounds

Another sign that indicates it's time for an oil change is a louder than usual engine. Many newer model cars have very quiet engines that make it easier to notice new sounds as soon as they develop. If you start to hear new sounds coming out of your engine or if the normal sounds have gotten louder, take a look at your motor oil. One of the basic functions of engine oil is lubricating engine parts. As your oil flows through your engine, it coats the tiny moving metal parts that keep your car moving. This helps reduce metal-to-metal contact that can damage your engine. If your oil is very old and no longer able to perform this function, these parts may be coming into contact with each other causing a noisy engine. If you can hear knocking, rumbling, or roaring, you likely need an oil change.
