A Common Pattern of the Winter Season

When temperatures drop and the rain hits, far fewer motorcycles are seen on the streets and highways, which is not a surprise with the slippery asphalt and the levels of alert gaining momentum. Not everyone feels safe to take their “wheels” out on the frozen roads. Motorcycles, and cars, are vehicles that, when used, suffer wear and tear. But if they are not used for long periods, they experience even more damage: the tires deteriorate, the liquids degrade, the battery discharges and the metallic parts get rusty. Keep on skimming through this post if you want to avoid this!

Keep it Covered

It’s recommended to buy a tarp to cover your two-wheeler: they are cheap, and covering it will not only prevent it from getting dusty or stained, but it will also help keep out prying eyes or unwanted manipulations. It wouldn’t be the first time the motorcycle ends up on the ground because someone “plays” around it in your absence if you store it in a parking lot. And if you have no other option than to keep it outside, look for a place that is not very remote and doesn’t expose the vehicle to the weather.

Give the Motorcycle the Proper Winter Care

Avoiding the metals’ deterioration is imperative, but the environmental dirt doesn’t help: washing it often is good. It’s always the first thing you must do before putting letting it rest. If you want or you need to let the motorbike rest for several weeks, do these three things:
  • Clean it thoroughly
  • Grease the chain if it has one
  • Inflate the wheels about three tenths above their pressure
  • Disconnect the battery (negative).
  • If you notice that a pneumatic has lost some air, leave it more over-inflated, but it’ll be necessary to repair it as soon as possible.
  • By the way, always leave it with the tank full: without air, it won’t rust inside.
Once you’re done with that, use a silicone spray, an oil that dries quickly but leaves a shiny film. Apply the product to the matt plastics, metal engine, and chassis parts, even seat fairing. Then, cover the motorcycle with a tarp. If you do this, the bike will retain its appearance, and the materials won’t age with weather changes and stand the test of time.

Be Careful with the Battery

Lack of use of the motorcycle severely damages the battery. It’s important to disconnect it if you intend to store it. If you plan to leave your bike idle during the winter, you can activate your battery with an intelligent charger. Your motorcycle will be available with this tool without subjecting the mechanics to sudden overexertion when it’s not working at an optimal temperature.

If You Are Willing to Let the Vehicle Rest for These Months, You Can Go One Step Further

To prevent the tires from deforming, you can calmly put a pound more to each tire instead of inflating the wheels only slightly above their correct pressure. And if the motorcycle has a stand, leave it on it. It’s more valuable than going it on the kickstand. Also, washing it before storing it’s a much-needed step. Wash it, and then grease whatever it touches: the chain, control cables, or joints, such as levers, pedals, footpegs, kickstand, and locks.

Lastly, If You Need to Go for a Ride during the Bike’s Winter Sleep

Connect the battery again and stop for a moment to check the pressures, although the bike won’t go wrong on you with a slight over-inflation either.
