Getting your car's oil changed is super important for your car, but anything beyond this fact can get confusing. To help you understand what's true about oil changes and what's not, check out these tips.

Oil Change Myths and the Truth Behind Them

Before getting your next oil change, be sure you understand what's true and what isn't about this service. Below are some common oil change myths and the truth behind them.

Oil Changes Are Needed Every 3,000 Miles

One of the most widely believed oil change myths states that oil changes are needed every 3,000 miles, but this statement simply isn't true. While this may have been more accurate many years ago, newer model cars don't need oil changes quite as often as it was once believed. The advances that have been made in oil change formulas are also another factor for this change. There is no one marker that all motorists need to follow because your oil change intervals will depend on what type of oil you're using, the engine in your car, and the type of driving you're doing.

Newer Cars Don't Need Oil Changes

Although oil changes aren't needed as often as we once believed, there's also no truth behind the idea that cars don't need oil changes at all. In fact, by completely skipping out on oil changes you could be putting your car in serious danger. Your engine needs the lubrication and protection motor oil provides in order to continue working efficiently. If your oil never gets changed, it will eventually become thick and will break down. As it turns into sludge, it will cause serious issues under your hood to the point where your engine will just stop working.

Switching to Synthetic Oil Is Forever

Somewhere along the way, people got the idea that if you decide to give synthetic oil a try there is no way you can ever go back to using a conventional oil. To put it simply, this isn't true at all. In fact, you can switch back and forth between the two without any worries as long as you're using the correct oil for your car. With that said, after reaping the benefits that synthetic oil offers, you may not want to switch back to a conventional oil. There are tons of benefits associated with getting a synthetic oil change in Austin. If you're interested in learning more about these benefits, contact AMSOIL Dealer- Carol Bell. Dark Oil Means It's Time for a Change

If you open up a fresh bottle of motor oil you'll notice that it's a light amber color. After a couple weeks of use, this light amber color will be replaced by a much darker tone. While you may be surprised by how drastic the change in color is, this isn't a bad thing. As your oil travels through your engine it will perform many jobs, including picking up debris, keeping things cool, and lubricating the many moving parts. As a result, it will get darker. This doesn't mean it needs to be changed. When your oil is ready to be changed it will be dark as well as thicker and it may even have some particles floating in it.

You Have to Go to the Dealership for Oil Changes

If you have a new car and are trying to ensure your warranty doesn't get voided, chances are you always go to the dealership to get your car serviced. While this isn't a bad thing, it doesn't hurt to know that your car's warranty won't get voided if you get your oil changed somewhere else. Your dealership may have a better understanding of your car, so it makes sense to go there, but you have more options if this is too much of a hassle. Just be sure to keep the records of the services you've had done just in case you need them in the future.

Thicker Oil Is Always Better

For some reason, people think that thicker oil automatically means better engine protection. Unfortunately, thicker oil will only be better for the engines that require it. If your manufacturer recommends using a thinner oil than the one you're using, your car won't be able to perform at its best. Instead of just springing for a thicker oil, look for one that falls under your manufacturer's recommendations.
